Storm Riders: On The Fly Cafe

The Storm Rider series aims to celebrate the strength of our industry while highlighting some of the many ways businesses have overcome the challenges resulting from COVID-19. We are proud to showcase how the following businesses have adapted while celebrating the people who are at the heart of what we do. In this post, we hear from the On The Fly Cafe in the Comox Valley Airport.

Why do you do what you do?

I find working in the hospitality business rewarding in so many personal ways-to me –” to serve is to give”.

What is your hope for the future of our region?

To remain safe and expand our values with grace and gratitude.

What do you most want people to know about your business?

That we love what we do – we really care about our customers and we make delicious pies that we are proud to serve with a smile.

In your own words, please share “Travel matters because”…

It gives us the opportunity for growth and exploration – the destination is not only a place to travel, but also the journey within ourselves.

Other than your own business, what are 3 other businesses in your community that visitors should experience?

  • Mt. Washington – snowshoeing and hot chocolate.
  • Lunch from one of the food trucks at Comox Marina.
  • Visit Beaufort Winery to sample wines with friends

The spark to own/work in this business must motivate you each day. – what are some of your past experiences that have contributed to this spark?

Seeing regular customers at the Airport even if they are not flying out, they’re just here for our pies! Getting a heartfelt compliment about our service, receiving comments on how we made a customer’s experience better than what they expected and just listening to someone who had an awesome visit to the Island. We’re so thankful for being a part of someone’s journey.

The Storm Riders series highlights how island-based businesses are adapting to new challenges brought on by COVID-19. If you’re a business and would like to share your story, please contact Darsey at [email protected].
