Take the Traveller Quiz Super, Natural British Columbia

First stop on the scenic highway north of Campbell River, Sayward sits pretty on the forested edge of the Johnstone Strait. Get provisions in the village and enjoy a meal. Stroll amidst the giant Douglas firs at White River Park (as stunning in its way as Cathedral Grove further south) or develop calves of steel when ascending the mile-high H’kusam Klimb. Birdwatchers flock to the Salmon River Wildlife Reserve.

Things to do in Sayward

  1. Challenge yourself on foot or mountain bike, then enjoy the see-forever panorama from the top of Mount H’Kusam. Dedicate a full day to the 23km loop circuit or shoot for a personal best during the Kusam Klimb trail race, held annually on the summer solstice.
  2. Watch for birds, bears and other wildlife at the Salmon River Wildlife Reserve. Guided tours are available.
  3. Fish for steelhead and salmon from the Port of Kelsey Bay wharf.
  4. In the Village of Sayward, check out artist Hetty Frederickson’s “Valley of a Thousand Faces” (a unique outdoor portrait gallery), then dine in a café wrapped in 26 tons of steel logging cable.
