Storm Riders: Horne Lake Caves

The Storm Riders series aims to celebrate the strength of our industry while highlighting some of the many ways businesses have overcome the challenges resulting from COVID-19. We are proud to showcase how the following businesses have adapted while celebrating the people who are at the heart of what we do. In this post, we hear from Richard Varela at Horne Lake Caves in Qualicum Beach.

Why do you do what you do?

I love living the outdoor life on Vancouver Island and sharing that passion with others looking for adventure.

What is your hope for the future of our region?

I hope to see our region grow the adventure tourism industry in a way that’s sustainable and promotes respect for our natural spaces.

What do you most want people to know about your business?

Discover another world right here on Vancouver Island! Exploring caves is a fun and exciting way to spend a few hours in nature and learn something new.

In your own words, please share “Travel matters because … “

It opens our eyes and minds to something new and expands our horizons.

Other than your own business, what are 3 other businesses in your community that visitors should experience?

  1. Wildplay in Nanaimo or Victoria
  2. Free Spirit Spheres
  3. Mt. Washington Alpine Resort

The spark to own/work in this business must motivate you each day. – what are some of your past experiences that have contributed to this spark?

Watching children’s eyes light up when they discover something new or hearing somebody say “wow that was an amazing experience ….. I didn’t think I could do it but I did!”
